Success for Ranui Community Garden at the New Zealand Flower and Garden Show!

Over the course of five days, one hundred exhibitors entered into the New Zealand Flower and Garden Show’s ‘Best in the Show’. Entrants were judged based on qualities such as command of space, use of design elements, use of materials and emotional impact.

Convenor of judges, Pascal Garbe, said the quality of exhibitions were outstanding. There is no doubt that designers had created world-class exhibits this year at the show.

Recently, Urban Maintenance Systems (UMS) had teamed up with the Ranui Community Garden. Donating any unplanted or removed plants so locals who frequent the gardens could take them home to enjoy.  Any remaining plants were turned into compost at the community garden. UMS was very pleased when it was announced that the Ranui Community Garden had won the Bronze Medal in the ‘Community Gardens Division’.

Buffie Mawhinney, Ranui Community Centre’s Sustainability Co-ordinator said: “I am proud of what the Community Gardens have achieved. I have had a great time getting the upcycling message out there and I get to do what I Iove”. Buffie also won an additional two Gold Medals – one for her ‘Funk Up My Junk’ and ‘The Winslow Girls’ exhibits.

This is a great example of UMS working with the local community to reach a smart and sustainable outcome.
